Mailing in passport photos? Follow these requirements.
- Name Change: If your name has changed since your last passport, provide legal documentation to support the change.
- Renewal Application: You are applying to renew a current and valid passport.
- Passport Condition: Your existing passport must be intact and in a condition suitable for submission.
- Age Requirement: You must be 16 years of age or older.
- Passport Issuance: Your current passport must have been issued within the last 15 years.
- Name Consistency: Your name must remain the same as in your existing passport.
If you are applying for a passport in person, you should meet one of the following conditions:
- First-Time Application: You are applying for a passport for the first time.
- Expired Passport: Your previous passport expired more than 15 years ago.
- Lost or Stolen: Your current passport has been lost or stolen.
- No Expired Passport: You do not currently possess an expired U.S. passport.
- Previous Passport Issuance: Your last passport was issued when you were under 16 years old.
Ensure your passport photo adheres to these specifications:
- Photo Age: The photo must be taken within the last 6 months.
- Size and Composition: The photo must be in color, with your head occupying about 50% of the height of the image (approximately 1 to 1 1/8 inches from chin to top of head).
- Background: The background must be plain white.
- Expression and Position: Face the camera directly with a neutral expression, eyes open, and mouth closed.
